You can get involved with the Department in a variety of ways.
TELL US WHAT YOU DO
We'd love to learn from you - from your experience and knowledge. You can connect with faculty, undergraduate students, and graduate students in several ways. - Career nights. Every year, students in our undergraduate program host a Career Night. The students invite 4 - 8 UBC Statistics alumni from a variety of fields to meet with undergraduates to discuss their careers and what it is like "in the real world".
- Graduate student seminar. Talk to our graduate students. One way is via the graduate student seminar, which runs weekly and is planned by and for graduate students.
- Department seminar. The department seminar series is a great way to describe to us the kinds of quantitative problems you encounter. You don't need to have a theorem! Interesting data and an interesting question suffice. Take a look at our past seminars to get an idea of the diversity of topics, under Events.
USE OUR EXPERTISE
We can help you with your quantitative needs. Here are some of the ways.
- Hire co-op students. We have two co-op programs: undergraduate- and MSc-level. The program is administered by the Faculty of Science Co-op, in cooperation with the Statistics Department. For information, please see the Science Co-op web page.
- Hire Research Assistants. You can hire full time or part time. This option has more flexibility than hiring via the co-op program. For information, please contact our Applied Statistics and Data Science group (ASDa).
- Hire a Data Science expert. Our Applied Statistics and Data Science group (ASDa) has staff to meet your data science needs, including study design, data cleaning, visualization, statistical analysis, scientific writing, grant writing support, and training.
- Collaborate with faculty. Our faculty members are noted for collaborative research with subject area researchers. The easiest ways to connect are to contact a faculty member directly (if you know the area of expertise) or to contact ASDa. ASDa can discuss your project and assist in forming a team that meets your needs.
- Hire an intern through Mitacs or NSERC Engage or gradinfo [at] stat.ubc.ca (subject: Inquiry%20re%20hiring%20graduate%20student%20intern) (directly). Mitacs supports collaborative research projects between an industry/non-profit partner, a professor, and a grad student or post-doc "intern”. The partner defines the problem, and the intern balances time on the project between the partner site and the university, under the professor's guidance. You can support a variety of student awards by donating to the Department's Statistics Fund for Excellence. This fund supports the Nash Medal for undergraduates, the Marshall Prize for graduate students, and the Graduate Teaching Assistant Award. You can support activities related to applied statistics and consulting, via the newly established Rick White Memorial Fund. You can support targeted awards: the Data Science Award or the Margaret Wylie Entrance Scholarship for Female PhDs. You can even create your own award.
