PhD student David Xu wins 2022 SBSS Student Paper Award
UBC Statistics PhD student, David (Zuheng) Xu, won an ASA Section on Bayesian Statistical Science (SBSS) Student Paper Award, sponsored by the American Statistical Association (ASA).
The SBSS student paper competition is for research on Bayesian methodology, which is broadly construed and includes applied, computational, or theoretical work.

UBC Statisticians and Ecologists develop enhanced statistical models
Statistics PhD student Evan Sidrow and his research team propose more advanced Markov models in their study to better understand the behaviours of northern resident killer whales and other species. Evan’s co-supervisors, faculty members Marie Auger-Méthé (Statistics Department and the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries) and Nancy Heckman (Statistics Department), also participated in the research.

Narwhals, sharks, and polar bears can help medical professionals improve care for patients with mental health struggles—and patients with conditions such as depression and bipolar disorder can offer insights that will help the conservation of many wild animals.
That’s what a first-of-its-kind project by researchers from UBC, the University of Toronto, University of Windsor, and Dalhousie University is proposing.
